SCARECROW26 by Micheli Maszniew (Johnston)
SCARECROW26 is reimagined from discarded farm and household materials, reconfigured into a functioning and useful scarecrow. This reflects the traditional practice of using whatever was on hand, a resourceful approach found in rural communities worldwide. It represents the practicality and ingenuity developed through living in remote areas with limited resources, particularly during the wartime years of the 1940s.
The blue animal barrier forms the body and represents mental health. Feathers symbolise pests, while the wreaths are made from crop prunings. Nuts, bolts, scrubbers, tools, gaskets and a drive plate represent hard manual work. The old metal sprinkler, an essential ingredient for survival, symbolises the heart of the owners.
